We use the word “holistic” in contrast to the word “specialised”. With holistic we mean that we study the organisms from a broad perspective simultaneously, i.e. we link systematics, ecology, physiology/cultivation, pharmacognosy, toxicology and food and nutrition. We also consider applied research as important as basic research.
We stress “holistic”, since it has occurred that chemists have published hypotheses about physiology without discussing with physiologists, and since chemists, physicians and biologists have not searched each other’s databases. There have also been situations where biologists have found valuable truffles without reporting to the land owner, who later had to sell his land on auction, unaware of the black gold.
With “holistic” we mean that all aspects are united in each brain of the researchers, with respect for different scientific fields, and respect for society and economy. We also include a bridge between research, education and commercial production. Within biology in Sweden, this approach is unusual.
